How the Instagram algorithm works

Feed

Your main feed is mostly posts from accounts you follow, ranked by how likely you are to engage with them: how often you interact with that account, what kind of post it is, and how recent it is. If your followers never react to you, your posts sink in their feeds.

Reels

Reels go mostly to viewers who haven’t followed you yet. The biggest signals are watch time (do people watch to the end, or replay?) and shares, particularly sends in DMs. This is why a small account can reach thousands with one good Reel.

Explore

Explore recommends posts from accounts you don’t follow, based on what you’ve engaged with before. Posts that reach it usually have strong engagement relative to their reach, especially saves and shares.

Stories

Stories are ordered by closeness: the accounts whose Stories you view, reply to and react to come first. They do little for discovery but a lot for keeping existing followers connected.

Signals, from strongest to weakest

1. Watch time and completed views (Reels).
2. Shares, especially by DM.
3. Saves.
4. Comments, particularly replies back and forth.
5. Likes.

Where bought likes and followers fit

Bought likes change how a post looks to the people who see it. They don’t add watch time, shares or saves, so they won’t unlock Explore by themselves. Bought followers don’t engage, so on an account where most followers are bought, the share of followers who react falls. Use small amounts, and put the effort into posts people want to share. Myths worth dropping

• “Hashtags are dead.” They matter less than they did, but a few relevant ones still help Instagram understand a post.
• “Editing a caption kills reach.” Instagram has said it doesn’t.
• “There’s a perfect time to post.” There’s a good time for your followers, which Insights will show you.
