Instagram for Irish small businesses
For a shop, salon, café or trade, Instagram is the shop window people check before they visit. Here’s how to make it work for customers, not just numbers.
Decide what Instagram is for
For most small businesses it’s three things: proof you’re open and active, a showcase of what you sell, and a way to answer questions. Followers matter because they make the first two believable, but bookings and sales are the actual goal.
What to post
- The work itself: the haircut, the cake, the finished kitchen.
- The people: staff, regulars (with permission), the owner explaining something.
- Practical stuff: opening hours, prices, how to book, where to park.
- Behind the scenes: deliveries, prep, the mess before the result.
Turn followers into customers
Put booking or ordering one tap away: a link in bio, a button on a business profile, clear replies in DMs. Pin a post with prices and location. Respond to every comment and message quickly; on a small account, that responsiveness is a reason to choose you.
Keep it local
Tag your location every time, work with neighbouring businesses, and join in on local events and causes. People in your town are the ones who can actually walk in.
When a boost makes sense
A new business whose page has 30 followers loses some customers who assume it’s not established. A modest bundle of 500 followers fixes that first look. A business that already has a few thousand followers gets little from more; better posts and replies matter more.
When it doesn’t
If you’re pitching to a brand that will audit your audience, or applying for something that judges engagement, skip it. And never let a marketing “agency” log in with your password to grow the account.
Measure
Track enquiries, bookings and “I saw you on Instagram” mentions, not just followers. That’s the number that pays rent.
Reviews and word of mouth
Instagram works best alongside the places people already check. Ask happy customers to tag you in their own posts and Stories, reshare them (with thanks), and keep your Google listing up to date. A tag from a real customer in your town is worth more than any number on your profile.
