How to spot fake followers

Brands, bookers and curious rivals all check. Knowing what they look at helps you vet accounts you’re about to work with, and keeps your own profile looking credible.

The engagement test

The first thing anyone checks is engagement compared with followers. An account with 20,000 followers whose posts get 40 likes stands out immediately. As a rough guide, most Instagram accounts see between 1 and 5 per cent of followers interacting with an average post; well below 1 per cent on a non-celebrity account is a warning sign. Our engagement calculator does the sum.

The follower list

Open the followers list and scroll. Clusters of accounts with no profile picture, no posts and usernames that are strings of letters and numbers suggest bought or automated followers. Every account has a few of these, so look for the proportion, not just their presence.

The growth curve

Third-party analytics tools show follower history. Steady growth with bumps around a viral post looks natural. A flat line that jumps by thousands overnight, and then sits flat again, is the classic sign of a large purchase. That’s why paced delivery and modest sizes matter.

Comments

Generic comments such as “Nice!” or a row of emojis from accounts with no link to the topic suggest engagement pods or bought comments. Real comments mention what’s in the post.

What this means if you’ve bought followers

  • Keep bundles in proportion to the account you have.
  • Keep posting so the engagement doesn’t collapse.
  • Be honest with brands about your organic numbers; many ask for Insights screenshots anyway.

For TikTok, the same logic applies to views versus likes; see the TikTok engagement calculator.

Tools people use to check

Brands often ask for screenshots from Instagram Insights or TikTok analytics, which show where followers are and when they’re active. Agencies use paid audit tools that estimate the share of suspicious followers. None of these are perfect, but a large gap between followers and engagement shows up in all of them.

Questions

Common questions

Can someone see that I bought followers?
Not with certainty, but a sudden jump or very low engagement is easy to notice. Modest, paced bundles on an active account look like ordinary growth.
